The 420 Obsession: Popular Cultural References.

What started as an undercover union of a handful of youths in the 1970's to get high, slowly slipped through the ageless boundaries of culture and generation, to bloom into a widely recognized movement.

Oh! Is it 420 by the way?

The era we live in is heavily dominated by oppressive law and orders that dictate the way one must live his life. This hasn't deterred pushing the counter-culture identification and obsession with the ubiquitous Cannabis Culture.

The term "420" has evolved from a meeting time for a group of teens in California in pursuit of weed to a code term used to refer to marijuana in general — a term popularized by the magazine High Times — to the point that April 20 (4/20) has practically become a holiday for pot smokers!

Here is a list collating several pop culture references and anecdotes to stir the obsessively high mind.
Enjoy!

* Pulp Fiction 420 :  It is widely believed that several clocks (not all) appearing in the scenes of the cult classic movie - Pulp Fiction - were set to point to 4:20. So is true for another classic Hollywood flick - Lost in Translation.

Coincidence?

* Family Guy 420 : The twelfth episode of the Seventh Season of the American sitcom Family Guy is pompously titled as 420. Yes! It was premiered the day before April 20 (4/20), focusing on celebrating the counterculture holiday for consumption of cannabis.

The plot has Stewie and Brian attempting to legalize marijuana!

* 420 Blaze It : On July 8th, 2012, Tumblr user welcometothedankside posted an edited version of a Belgian comic panel, showing a father attempting to persuade his six-year-old daughter to smoke marijuana by saying “420 blaze it faggot”

Within the next seven months, the post received over 48,300 notes!

Smoke it will you?

* California Senate Bill 420 : Signed by the Governor of California, the bill regulates marijuana used for medical purposes.

* Bill Maher's 4/20Renowned American comedian and political commentator petitioned Congress to create a National Weed Day and performed a reading of “Twas the Night Before 4/20.” on his famous talk show: Real Time with Bill Maher.

* Saturday Night Live's 420 : "In celebration of his favorite holiday, a stoner revisits the history of marijuana culture, wishing everyone a very smoky 420!"

The number 420 debunked: Why is April 20 observed as The National Weed Day?

Q: Why is a large population
trying to "get high"
on April 20,
precisely at 16:20 hours?

A: 'Coz, April 20 can be written as 4/20
and 16:20 hours as 4:20 pm.

So, what is it about the mystical number 420?

Myths

A recent Google search for "420" brought up 913 million hits. However, the thoughts behind the number's origination and the sudden upsurge in counter-culture remain as obscured as the clouds emanating from the red-eyed "tokers".

Let us get some myths about the number 420 up in smoke:

* Bob Marley did not die or born on April 20 (4/20). Yes, he smoked weed as a sacrament, piously - thanks to The Rastafarian weed connection!

* Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 - but other than the date, he is never associated with cannabis usage - sad?

* 420 isn't the number of chemical compounds in cannabis. It is reportedly around 315.

* 420 isn't a police radio code or penal code for marijuana in America.

* Bob Dylan in "Rainy Day Woman #12 and 35," repeatedly chants, "Everybody must get stoned!". Now, although, 12 multiplied by 35 equals 420, that is not how the number got associated with The Stoner's Day!

The Real Deal!

Q: So if the number 420 isn't credited to Bob Marley or Bob Dylan, who do we acclaim ?

A: In the early 1970's, a group of stoners calling themselves "The Waldos" — because they liked to hang out in front of a wall — would pass each other in the halls, exchanging knowing glances and muttering "420 Louis!", referring to a St. Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time.

* It’s however, likely that the number 420 would have buried deep, except that Waldo Dave’s older brother was a friend of Phil Lesh, bassist for the Grateful Dead.

* Learning the phrase from underground counter-culture, Lesh, and the Dead spent the next four decades touring the globe and passively popularizing the association between the number 420 and the consumption of pot!

* In 1990, Steve Bloom, an editor at High Times, saw 420 explained on a Grateful Dead concert flyer and the staff started using it, gradually popularising it in mainstream culture too.

* Fast-forwarding to the present years: 420 is as big a holiday, at least as unofficial ones go.

* Several 420 events are being organized across the globe to mobilize and carry forward the legacy of 4/20, what started as a minuscule level of get-together by five youths in front of a random statue in a random college park.

So, now that you know where the 4/20 originated from, are you going to go up in smoke at 16:20 hours, with a renewed sense of understanding and meaningfulness?

And just in case you miss out the perfect number, remember:

Isn't it?

May the force be with you!
